Cash value that follows the market, with a floor under it.
Indexed universal life, or IUL, is permanent life insurance whose cash value earns interest based on a stock index such as the S&P 500. A cap limits the upside and a floor keeps an index loss from reducing your credited interest. Julieann shows you both numbers, plus the policy costs, before you commit.

Nothing on this page is a quote or an offer of insurance. Coverage, pricing and eligibility depend on the carrier, underwriting and your state.
Ask about the cap, the floor and the fees
An IUL illustration can look better than the policy performs. Your money is not invested in the index. The carrier credits interest based on the index, up to a cap, and deducts insurance and policy charges from the cash value each month.
Julieann walks through the cap rate, the floor, the participation rate and the monthly charges on each illustration she shows you. She also shows what happens if you pay less than the planned premium, because an underfunded IUL can lapse.
Who an IUL tends to fit
- People who want permanent coverage and can fund it steadily for years
- People who have already used other tax-advantaged savings
- People comfortable with a policy that needs a yearly review
